9) FF MOVIE REVIEWS
The FF Rating system is gauged by use of the FF button in increments of 10% of running time. If I FF through a tenth of the film (i.e., 9 minutes of a 90-min film), its FF Rating is 1. Thus, the lower the FF Rating, the higher my level of engagement. (Note, I didn't say the better the film. Crap can - and often does - engage me.) FF = 5 is the threshold of unwatchable.
Bail Factor: If you turn off a film at the halfway point, that's an automatic 5. If you bail after only a quarter or so, that's an automatic 7.5. Then you add how much FFing you did before shutdown.
Why should you care what I think of a film? Beats me.
Movie plot summaries abound on the web, so you don't need me for that.

THE WIFE
A rather dull flick where you sit around waiting for the big reveal that you sussed out in the first ten minutes but you're hoping it's not that because it's too obvious. I didn't think Glenn Close was any better in this than in a dozen other roles (frankly, she wasn't given a lot to work with). In its favor I can say it's a lot better than "Roma."

YOU (Netflix)
A bit contrived, lots of plot holes, but I watched all 10 episodes because the characters were so well done and every time I thought I knew where it was going, it took an unexpected turn.

It's a classic murder mystery but also a mind-boggling roman a clef about the Golden Age of SF with Heinlein and Kuttner and L. Ron as disguised characters. 9) FF MOVIE REVIEWS
The FF Rating system is gauged by use of the FF button in increments of 10% of running time. If I FF through a tenth of the film (i.e., 9 minutes of a 90-min film), its FF Rating is 1. Thus, the lower the FF Rating, the higher my level of engagement. (Note, I didn't say the better the film. Crap can - and often does - engage me.) FF = 5 is the threshold of unwatchable.
Bail Factor: If you turn off a film at the halfway point, that's an automatic 5. If you bail after only a quarter or so, that's an automatic 7.5. Then you add how much FFing you did before shutdown.
Why should you care what I think of a film? Beats me.
Movie plot summaries abound on the web, so you don't need me for that.

AQUAMAN
Finally got around to seeing it last night. Visually stunning but conceptually moronic. It opens with automatic assault rifle barrage aboard a submarine. Really? Then that's compounded by daddy launching a 40mm grenade at our hero. Double really? That was when I put my brain on hold. Puzzled by the scene making sure we saw a copy of a "Dunwich Horror" paperback when "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" would have been much more appropriate. Some of the visuals are truly amazing, though -- swimming down into the trench with the flare with all those monsters in pursuit was jaw dropping.

ENDING A SERIES:
Avengers: Endgame – While I'm not a Marvel fan and couldn't identify a lot of the players in the last battle (and haven't seen Captain Marvel yet), I thought its tie-up of so many loose ends hit most of the plot points and emotional buttons. (I've always had a soft spot in my heart for Agent Carter).today and was quite moved.
Game of Thrones – Though I didn't see a need for a redo of the last season (really, a petition?), I did find it emotionally lacking. All those years of watching deserve catharsis, and GoT didn't provide it. Not a bad finale, but definitely not as satisfying as we needed.
Deadwood – that's the way to do it. I was a bit disappointed that Swearengen didn't have a more heroic ending, but then he uttered that last line. Bam!

JOHN WICK 3
Truly amazing action film, but I admit to wearying of the endless chop-socky in the third act. Some of those scenes could easily have been trimmed. Great ending, though. Ready for Chap. 4 in 2021.

[Historical note: Years ago I sold film/TV rights to THE TOMB to Beacon Films. The idea has been to title the film "Repairman Jack" and turn our guy into a franchise character. The project has spent 20 years in development hell, chewing up 6 or 7 writers who've churned out reams of scripts.

9) FF MOVIE REVIEWS
The FF Rating system is gauged by use of the FF button in increments of 10% of running time. If I FF through a tenth of the film (i.e., 9 minutes of a 90-min film), its FF Rating is 1. Thus, the lower the FF Rating, the higher my level of engagement. (Note, I didn't say the better the film. Crap can - and often does - engage me.) FF = 5 is the threshold of unwatchable.
Bail Factor: If you turn off a film at the halfway point, that's an automatic 5. If you bail after only a quarter or so, that's an automatic 7.5. Then you add how much FFing you did before shutdown.
Why should you care what I think of a film? Beats me.
Movie plot summaries abound on the web, so you don't need me for that.

CHERNOBYL
Well, I didn't intend to see this but people kept saying how good it was. Glad I did. It's a gripping tale of rampant incompetence and the dangers of statism. I was struck when, with a reactor completely destroyed, one of the scientists was told that nuclear disasters simply don't happen in the Soviet state. I immediately flashed back to "Citizen X" when the psychiatrist investigating the child murders was told "There is no serial killer in the Soviet state." Party affiliation trumps competence - the head of the nuclear energy department didn't know how a reactor worked, and on and on. You have to ask yourself: How could a disaster NOT occur?
